Prevent another tragedy
e2Campus was inspired by and invented after learning of Jeanne Clery’s story and her family’s proactive response to this tragedy.
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) is the federal law that calls for the disclosure of campus safety information by colleges and universities. It is named in memory of 19-year-old Lehigh University freshman Jeanne Ann Clery who was raped and murdered in her residence hall room on April 5, 1986.
Jeanne’s parents, Connie and Howard, discovered that students hadn’t been told about 38 violent crimes on the Lehigh campus in the three years before her murder. They joined with other campus crime victims and persuaded Congress to enact the law, originally known as the “Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990” to ensure that future students would be better informed, and protected.
In addition to disclosing campus crime statistics and summaries of steps taken to keep campuses safe, the law has since its inception required that campus communities receive timely warnings about crimes that represent an ongoing threat. Institutions that fail to comply with the law can now be fined up to $35,000 per violation by the U.S. Department of Education.
Following the mass shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech, in which 32 students and faculty were killed on April 16, 2007, the families of those killed and survivors, known as the VTV families, banded together to support updating the law. As a result, the Act now also requires that campuses issue immediate notifications about any emergency situation that is a threat to the health or safety of students and employees, significantly broadening the scope of circumstances that trigger alerts.
The VTV families told Congress, in 2008, that “these warnings must be issued as soon as possible”. The multi-platform e2Campus system is an important tool that can help campuses realize their expectation, and protect the entire campus from danger.
